Jean M. Haiskanen, 97, of Chisholm, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 14, 2016. She was born on March 15, 1919, in Duluth to Robert and Esther (Olson) Carlson.
Jean lived and worked on the family farm in Balkan Township between 1946 and1957. She then worked as a secretary at several loan offices, at the Chisholm shirt factory, and at Bechtel Corporation. Although Jean and Sulo had no children of their own, they had a hand in raising two nephews and one niece. Jean loved her flower and vegetable gardens and the outdoors. She enjoyed snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. Every week, she made loaves of bread and Finnish flatbreads. Her stews were a staple for the deer hunters, and she could process venison with the best. She had an adventurous heart, taking flying lessons in her 60’s, even soloing, and she loved it.
Jean is survived by one sister-in-law, Betty Carlson of Florida; niece Sylvia (Frank) Elmquist of Forest Lake; nephew, James (Sharon) Haiskanen of Grand Rapids; and special “grandchildren”, Tara, Jeff, Laurel, Greg, Adam, and Michael. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sulo; brother, Clyde; and nephew, Peter.
