Obituary for Nels "Ted" Sinnott

A memorial celebration of Nels’ life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017, at Chisholm Baptist Church with Pastor Dan Erickson officiating. Visitation will be for one-half hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Inurnment will be at a later date in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Military honors will be accorded by Mid-Range Honor Guard. The family wishes to offer special thanks to the staff of Heritage Manor in Chisholm, the Fairview Range Home Care & Hospice Team, the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Dr. Bret Friday, and the Essentia Health oncology nursing staff in Duluth, Virginia and Hibbing, MN. Arrangements are entrusted to Rupp Funeral Home & Cremation Service.

Nels “Ted” Sinnott, 89, long time resident of Chisholm, MN, died Saturday, September 16, 2017, at Heritage Manor in Chisholm, after a courageous battle with cancer. Nels was born on February 25, 1928, in Hibbing, MN, to Pierre J. and Esther M. (Nelson) Sinnott. He was a 1946 graduate of Hibbing High School where he excelled as a Golden Gloves boxer.

Nels was a U.S. Navy veteran, where he served as an electronics technician aboard the U.S.S. Yosemite. He was the last survivor of eight children, seven of whom proudly served in the armed forces during WWII and the Korean War. He married the love of his life, Shirley J. (Koski) Sinnott in 1950, to whom he was married for 64 years. Nels was employed by several iron ore mining companies where he worked as an electrician and as an electrical foreman. During his career, he achieved earning a license as a Master Electrician. He was also employed as an Electrical Instructor for Hibbing and Duluth Technical Colleges and for Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, who hired him to teach in Jamaica. In retirement, Nels enjoyed doing extensive research and documentation of family genealogy on both his mother’s and father’s sides of the family. He also enjoyed spending time with family, and more recently had reconnected with extended family across the country via the internet and Facebook.

He is survived by daughters, Corrine (David) Seeba, and Rene Saarinen; son, Ted (Kristyn) Sinnott; grandchildren, Paul (Anna Marie) Saarinen, Tim Saarinen, Kayla Sinnott, Joshua Sinnott, and Luke Sinnott; great-grandchildren, Elle and Eve Saarinen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley; his sisters, Mae Kunz and Phyllis Martin; brothers, Jim, Lawrence, Victor, Don, and Bert Sinnott; son, Mark Sinnott; son-in-law, Glenn Saarinen; and grandson, Daniel Sinnott.
