Russell Charles Palmquist, 89, of Chisholm, Minn., died Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Essentia Health St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth. He was born in Chisholm on July 28, 1927, to Victor and Mary (Berg) Palmquist and was a lifelong resident. He was raised in Fraser (smallest city in the world totally enclosed in a fence) and graduated from Chisholm High School in 1945.

Russell joined the U.S. Air Force upon graduation and served in the Medical Corps on Long Island, NY. After honorable discharge, he returned to Chisholm and began his life’s work for U.S.X. Because of a lengthy layoff at U.S.X., he was hired at Reserve Mining Co. in Babbitt and worked there for nearly nine years, after which he resumed his position at U.S.X. as a foreman in the locomotive shop until his retirement in 1986.

On February 9, 1957, Russell was united in marriage to Dorothy “Jean” Lundberg, daughter of Homer and Dorothy E. Lundberg. They remained in Chisholm and raised their two children, a son and a daughter.

Russell was instrumental in starting the Chisholm Volunteer Fire Department, was a charter member, and was active for 20 years, serving as assistant chief for many of those great years. He always wanted to be a fireman and really loved helping people in trouble.

Russell also served on several commissions, including Meals on Wheels for 18 years and enjoyed meeting and being of service to homebound “older folks.”

Russell was a member of the Chisholm Housing and Redevelopment Authority for 19 years, retiring in 2016 as chairman. He was also a member of the Chisholm American Legion Press-Lloyd Post #247 and enjoyed meetings with other veterans. Russell was a member of the Chisholm United Methodist Church and served as trustee and usher.

Russell will be sadly missed by his wife, Jean, having recently celebrated their 60th anniversary. He is also survived by his son, Chuck (Sandy) of Chisholm; daughter, Margaret (Keith Fulcher) of Cook; granddaughters, Kristen (Aaron Hallsten) of Duluth, and Margaret Mae Palmquist of Hibbing; great-granddaughter, Ivy J. Palmquist of Hibbing; brother, Norman (Gen) of Chisholm; sisters-in-law, Victoria Lundberg Gornick of Chisholm and Audrey (Kangas) Lundberg of Brainerd; brothers-in-law, Richard Lundberg and Bob Perkovich of Chisholm; and last, but not least, little dog, Bella.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Victor; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; his in-laws, Homer and Dorothy; grandson, Ben Erickson; and many other relatives and close friends.

He was the last surviving member of his “bunch” of fishing buddies, smear players, and bowling friends. He especially enjoyed being with his children, granddaughters, and great-granddaughter, Ivy.
